made it back alive from NYU Paris, my study abroad trip was very fun and insightful. the main questions i’m anticipating:

  • my favorite thing I ate abroad was the Shoyu ramen from Kodawari Ramen. a close second place is Berlin Döner. the french pastries were good but i’m not really into that kind of food in general.
  • my favorite thing about Paris is the parks and the public transit (this can be said about europe at large)
  • my favorite thing I did abroad was seeing Germany (Superbooth, Berlin, Dresden)
  • my favorite places i visited in no particular order
    • berlin; superbooth, the autobahn, berlin wall art gallery. i also found it really funny how checkpoint charlie is located right next to a mcdonalds and a kfc
    • dresden / bad schandau; saxon-switzerland national park. hiked a small bit of it and then napped for the rest of the day because i had an ear-nose-throat infection
    • prague; saw my friend keith at prague and had a banger malatang bowl. also their spiked ginger ale whiskey goes hard
    • copenhagen; went to the first adc copenhagen event so i didn’t get to see a lot of the city but overall it was very pretty.
    • athens; hades 2 irl!?? hiked up a random hill and dropped my phone, only regret is that the weather was cloudy and we didn’t get the chance to see the temple of hephaestus
    • florence; the gelato and sandwiches and the city vibe was night and day compared to that i was used to in paris. definitely the best pizza i have ever had came from spots in florence

what i’m currently up to:

  • implementing an embedded version of tralie’s concatenator project to the linux beagleboard system. i made it through 3-4 steps of the python homework assignment before giving up from my ineptitude (and distaste) for the python language and began plotting a project out in C++. given that the target is a BELA Gem (see above, beagleboard 2), we have some knobs we can play with that aren’t typically available. most notably, we can parallelize the particle filter through OMP
  • wrapping up some sound design (backgrounds, hard fx, some surreal atmospheric and “metacharacter” sounds) for an upcoming feature length film known as “cuttlefish”. it’s been kinda surreal to be able to do something like this after only doing some light sound redesign stuff as side projects but it’s cemented audio post at large (and sound design adjacent stuff) as something i would love to pursue as a career in the future
  • spearheading the genaudio rebrand as the new vice president. we found that there wasn’t a lot of interest in the intersection between ai and audio. we also found out that our current brand image kind of reeks of tech bro, and while we have proven to have been able to retain the engineering crowd, it has been hard to attract the creatives. the rebrand will expand the scope of the club to almost act as a bridge between engineering and creativity (we plan on naming it after the blue video game character sonic; SOund, eNgineering, Innovation, Creativity)
  • doing some product stuff and video editing for seamoonFX as a summer intern. super stoked to be apart of a music tech company in some capacity this summer

where my eyes are set for the future

  • revisiting some old projects as an excuse to do some creative coding and embedded stuff
    • game and midi controller and the brain eeg midi controller deserve their own expansions to create a stochastic generative music system
  • dsp readings
    • JOS’ discrete fourier transform, maybe some circuit stuff and filter design if i get around to it
  • calculus iii and electronic music performance at nyu
    • hopefully through electronic music performance i will get to realize my desire to mod minecraft into a performance tool (spit out some osc or midi cc and stuff to control other musical systems)
  • this one paper on ai music detection that i am forgetting the name of
  • a way to translate binary data into musical effects (we can first start with a transfer function and an impulse response because a distortion and reverb would go pretty hard, maybe after that a S/H or a CV generator of some kind). it would be really cool to be able to insert a usb full of random computer files and have that be the “guitar tone” that people seek for.
  • games
    • deadlock. props to it for kicking my league addiction; if only they add an udyr-esque character i will be 10 times more addicted than i am now playing victor
    • the finals. i suck at fps games but this one is calling me to get my ass kicked again and again
    • hunger (upcoming). an apocalyptic napoleonic rpg-extraction shooter that looks so unbelievably good
    • roguelikes like risk of rain, slay the spire 2, hades 2 (been dying to try the zag’s journey mod), and black jacket. when rogue core gets in better shape i would be down to try that as well.
